Most families keep their most important records the same way: a filing cabinet, a folder in a desk drawer, a safe-deposit box, and a few documents nobody is quite sure about. It works — until the day someone else has to find everything.

Stacks of physical documents grow year after year. It becomes easy to lose track of what's there and what isn't. And if you're building a legacy plan around those papers, your family may struggle to find them, understand them, or act on them when it matters most.

That's why more families are securing their assets — and their family's security — with a **digital vault**. Here's a quick overview of how a digital legacy vault compares to physical documents — and why the right one does far more than store files.

## Physical Documents vs. a Digital Legacy Vault

|   | Physical documents | Digital legacy vault |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Fire, flood, loss** | One disaster can destroy everything | Stored securely across multiple regions |
| **Finding things** | Depends on who remembers where | Organized by category in one place |
| **Digital accounts** | Rarely written down at all | Recorded, with instructions for each one |
| **Keeping it current** | Easy to forget for years | Update anytime, from anywhere |
| **Reaching your family** | Only if someone finds the folder | Delivered automatically to the people you choose |

Physical documents still matter — some originals must stay on paper. But as the *only* system, they leave your family depending on memory and luck.

## Why iCloud, OneDrive and Google Drive Aren't Enough

Everything is digital now — bank accounts, insurance portals, investment portfolios, photos, even social media. It's tempting to scan your paperwork, upload it to cloud storage, and call it done. But ordinary cloud storage wasn't built for legacy planning:

- **Your provider can read your files.** Standard cloud storage is encrypted, but the company holds the keys. That's what lets them recover your account — and it means your most sensitive records aren't truly private.
- **Your family can't get in.** When the account holder dies, providers follow their own terms and privacy law. Relatives are often locked out, even with a death certificate.
- **Nothing is delivered.** A folder in your Google Drive doesn't know when your family needs it, or who should see which part.

A digital vault is designed for exactly the moment cloud storage fails.

## What Is a Digital Vault?

A digital vault is more than storage space in the cloud. It's a secure, private place to organize everything your family would need — and a system for getting it to them at the right time.

IronClad Family's vault is built on **zero-knowledge encryption**:

- **Encrypted on your device.** Files are protected with AES-256 encryption before they ever leave your computer or phone.
- **Nobody at IronClad can read them.** We don't hold the key. If our systems were ever breached, there would be nothing readable to take.
- **Individually protected.** Every vault has its own key, so there's no single pool of data to target.
- **Backed by two U.S. patents,** covering automated posthumous delivery and the encryption behind it.

That's the key difference between a legacy planning vault and a regular storage service: family security that doesn't depend on trusting a company.

## What to Put in Your Digital Vault

A complete digital legacy vault covers far more than a will. IronClad Family organizes everything into nine categories:

- **Personal** — identification, dependents, key contacts
- **Assets** — bank and investment accounts, property, life insurance, vehicles, valuables
- **Debts** — mortgages, loans, credit cards
- **Legal** — your will, trust, power of attorney, and where the originals are
- **Digital** — email, cloud storage, social media, devices, crypto, domains
- **Health** — insurance, medications, healthcare directive
- **Funeral** — your wishes and any arrangements already made
- **Personal wishes** — messages and instructions for the people you love
- **People** — who receives each vault, and how they'll open it![Digital Vault Dashboard](https://www.ironcladfamily.com/hs-fs/hubfs/digital-legacy-vault-dashboard.png?width=2680&height=1720&name=digital-legacy-vault-dashboard.png)

The digital category is the one most families overlook. Americans estimate their digital assets are worth **$191,516** on average, yet fewer than 15% have a plan that covers them. *(Bryn Mawr Trust Digital Assets Survey, 2024 — self-estimated values.)*

## The Dead Man's Switch: How a Digital Legacy Vault Reaches Your Family

Storing documents safely is only half the job. The other half is making sure the right people receive them when the time comes. That's the role of a dead man's switch — automated delivery that doesn't rely on anyone remembering where you kept things.

With IronClad Family, you decide:

- **Who receives what.** Separate vaults for separate people — a Family Vault for your spouse and children, an Estate Vault for your executor or attorney, a Medical Vault for whoever would need it in an emergency.
- **When it opens.** On a date you choose, or on your passing.
- **How they unlock it.** Each person answers a question only the two of you would know — a shared memory, like the street you grew up on. That answer becomes the key.

**You can also preview exactly what each person will receive — today.** Send them the preview link so they know what's waiting, and the conversation happens while you're here to have it.

## Keep Your Originals — Just Don't Rely on Them Alone

A digital vault doesn't replace every piece of paper. Signed wills, deeds and titles often need to exist as originals. The vault's job is different: it records *what* you have, *where* the originals are, and *what you want done* — so your family isn't searching the house in the worst week of their lives.

A few rules worth following:

- **Store originals somewhere safe,** like a fireproof box, and note their location in your vault.
- **Never put passwords in your will.** Wills can become public records during probate.
- **Talk to an estate attorney** about the legal documents themselves. A vault organizes and delivers information; your attorney creates the legal authority.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is a digital vault safer than physical documents?

For most families, yes — as long as it uses zero-knowledge encryption. A digital vault can't be lost in a fire or flood, and with zero-knowledge encryption, not even the company storing it can read your files. Keep signed originals safe as well, and record where they are in the vault.

### Can IronClad Family see my documents?

No. Your files are encrypted on your own device before they reach us, and we never hold the key. That's what zero-knowledge means.

### What happens to my digital vault when I die?

Each vault is delivered to the people you chose, at the time you chose. They open it by answering a question only they would know the answer to.

### Do I still need a will if I have a digital vault?

Yes. A will creates legal authority; a digital vault organizes the information your family needs to act on it. They work together. IronClad Family is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice.
